below! BRIEF HISTORY OF GOLD Gold, jade, salt, spices, and even silk have been major forms of trade throughout the world. This trade allowed nations to prosper, as domestic markets could grow beyond domestic consumption and grow into new markets. A 'benchmark' currency allowed trade between cultures by overcoming language barriers, creating a standard for value, and universal acceptance. At the root of this was gold. Gold coins are not a new concept. Gold is thought to have become a store of wealth around 4,000 B.C. (around 6,000 years ago). Gold, in the form of a coin, is thought to have been minted in the sixth century B.C. EAGLE GOLD COIN HISTORY 1792 to 1849 U.S. Gold Coins The history of gold in America dates back to the Coinage Act of 1792. Post revolutionary war, the U.S. needed a national currency. Gold and silver was chosen for the new nation as standards. The U.S. was defined as 24.75 grams of fine gold and 371.25 grains of pure silver. With gold as a standard, it was necessary for the young nation to find a source of domestic gold for coinage. Cabarrus County, near Charlotte N.C. would become 'the' source for much of the gold used from mintage at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In fact, from 1804 to 1828 ALL of the gold used to mint coins came from this region. In 1848 gold was discovered in California and the great gold rush was on. This was followed by a gold rush in Alaska in 1898. >> $10 Eagle Gold Coin 1849 to 1907 U.S. Gold Coins
